BENTON HARBOR — Whirlpool Corp. recorded a loss of $259 million in its first quarter of the year, as officials cite a slow U.S. home sales and limited demand.

According to the company’s first-quarter earnings report, the Benton Harbor appliance maker said it had a loss of $4.72 on a per-share basis. Earnings, adjusted for costs related to mergers and acquisitions and pretax expenses, were $1.78 per share.
